Playing with Mathematics

Those of you who were at her last talk, or managed to snag a place at her packed-out workshop at QED, will know this month's speaker. Mathematician and YouTuber Katie Steckles told us last time about how mathematics can be applied to your everyday life; this time she'll take some everyday-seeming games and puzzles you might or might not have seen, and show how they fit into our understanding of mathematics — or our lack of it. Come along to have some fun with maths, and find out where it can take you.

Katie Steckles is a mathematician based in Manchester, who gives talks and workshops on different areas of maths. She finished her PhD in 2011, and since then has talked about maths in schools, at science festivals, on BBC radio, at music festivals, as part of theatre shows and on the internet. She enjoys doing puzzles, solving the Rubik's cube and baking things shaped like maths.

She also runs the Manchester chapter of MathsJam, which meets at Port Street Beer House at 7PM on the penultimate Tuesday of every month.
